Some brief comments on this pre-electoral moment in America in a video for the Italian online newspaper UnioneSarda.it***
By Lorenzo Bona
Recently, an online newspaper - UnioneSarda.it - from the Italian region of Sardinia where I grew up asked me for a video with a brief analysis of the current pre-electoral moment in the U.S.
Here the video that appeared on November 2nd 2024 on their website: https://www.unionesarda.it/multimedia/stati-uniti-verso-le-presidenziali-duello-incerto-le-valutazioni-di-un-sardo-che-andra-al-voto-xawm747s
A sort of summary of the ideas that I tried to offer in that video could perhaps organized in the following way:
Considering the current pre-electoral moment that many Americans are living in, it appears to be present a pronounced sense of division across various issues that resonate deeply with people: for example, the rising costs of living, debates over abortion rights, the topic of immigration, or concerns and fears surrounding conflicts across the globe—especially in Ukraine and the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian crisis.
This pervasive sense of division often seems to highlight a fundamental political question: how to effectively balance efficiency with equity in ways that feel just and sustainable. It's around this type of question that many Americans, as well as the two primary political parties, seem to confront each other in search of better and more sustainable answers and solutions than those that have emerged so far.
Yet, despite this climate of division, there remains a powerful undercurrent of American values rooted in pragmatism and collaboration. These cultural qualities continue to reflect the resilience that has historically enabled Americans to navigate challenges and unite through difficult times.
In light of these enduring qualities, there is reason to look toward the post-election period with a sense of renewed confidence and optimism —a hope that unity and shared purpose can once again help Americans address the pressing issues that face us all.
